Day 117 –Good News and Sad News July 23, 2006 (Sunday)
Today we have meetings after church. We are waiting for the bishop to get out of another meeting so he can meet with us and the rest of the ward council. Since I have a moment, I’ll talk about church today.
Good News! We had an investigator at church today. C was there. Another surprise guest; R was there as well. He’s going to try to come every week. That’s great. It’ll give me a chance to visit with him, since he is no longer in our area. We also taught the Gospel Principles class again this week. We met in the Relief Society room. We had a small class. C and R were the only two in the class. More people trickled in as the lesson went on, but still a pretty small class. C really enjoyed it, though. She said that she had a great time and wants to come back next week. We asked her if we could come by and teach her sometime later. She said Thursday would be good. So we’ll try for that. We also want to ask her about going to the Visitor’s Center sometime.
Okay, we’re back from church now. Some sad news. Just before we left from church, we saw the Reston Elders (Elder Oram and Elder Phelps). That wasn’t the sad news. The sad news is what Elder Oram told me. As it turns out, Elder Bailey (remember him? {Day 57}). Well, as it turns out, he won’t be coming back out on a mission. His back is so messed-up that the doctors say he’ll need over 2 years to fully recover. He’s been fully released as a missionary. I think it’s kind of sad. So does Elder Oram; but he tells me Elder, … oops, I mean Brother Bailey is doing okay. His main focus now is getting better.
Elder Pierce and I tracted one hour today, bringing my tracting time up to an even 40 hours. As we were coming home from tracting, (we were taking the Herndon Parkway), when someone honked and waved at us. It was S and her two kids, D and S. She didn’t stop, but her window was rolled down and she yelled out, “Hi, guys!” We waved back. It was nice to see her. We plan on teaching her Thursday; and then, of course, there is the Visitor’s Center on Saturday. Now, let me see… there was some reason why we couldn’t see S on Tuesday, (S told us Tuesdays and Thursdays are the best days to see her during the week), … now what was it?... (“Criminy, Jim! Jim!” – Mr. Krabs) I FORGOT!!! ZONE CONFERENCE IS THIS TUESDAY! I HAVEN’T WRITTEN MY TALK ON THE ATONEMENT YET! I DON’T HAVE TIME TO WASTE; I NEED TO GET BUSY! (I’ll write in here later.)
Well, I’ve got an idea on how I’m going to give my talk on the Atonement. I’m not close to being done with it by any means; I’ll finish it tomorrow. (Like I could put it off any longer at this point?)
I’d like to talk about a man I had the pleasure of meeting tonight. His name is R.S. Elder Pierce and I were just locking up our bikes when a big, white van pulled up beside us. The man inside said, “Hey, Elders!” This was Brother S.
A small amount of background. R.S. and his family are a performing musical group. They go around and play classical music, patriotic songs and church hymns in Fredericksburg, Virginia and Branson, Missouri. He gave Elder Pierce and me each a bookmark. A bookmark he made that he gives out at all of his family’s concerts. It has a ton of quotes from famous people about different things. It also has scriptures quoted throughout it. Including L.D.S scriptures like Alma 41:10 and D&C 50:23 to name a few. It’s really neat.
Brother S had a referral for us. He told us, “Ya’ know, I was just talking with this man not 20 minutes ago. After I left, I thought, “I really need to get him in touch with the missionaries.” No sooner did I think that, then the I spied you two on you bikes!” He gave us the man’s information. He does not live in our area, but we’ll be able to pass it onto the missionaries in Sterling.
We thanked Brother S for the referral and for the bookmarks. He replied, “No trouble. You guys are the best of the best. Never forget that you’re out here doing the Lord’s work.” What a nice man. Well, I’ve had a pretty good Sunday today and the rest of the week is looking up! (“Today’s forecast calls for blue skies.” – Mr. Blue Sky, E.L.O.)
