Day 109 – Going to Jail-July 15, 2006

Today we saw A in jail. It was good to see him again. I was there along with my companion, Elder Pierce and Brother S, our ward mission leader. One week ago we went up to visit A, but weren’t able to see him {Day 102}. His mom went to visit him last week. So I called and asked her yesterday if it was okay for us to see him this time. She said that would be fine.
Okay, here is the reason A is in jail. His mother told me what happened on {Day 88}. Now I’m getting it straight from the horse. A has been in prison since late June and will be in prison until his court date on September 11th, because he is accused of stealing his girlfriend’s cell phone from her…at gun-point. It’s ridiculous. What happened was, A and his girlfriend, M, had a fight in his car. He told her to get out. She did and left her cell-phone behind. She calls A later at his house and asks where her cell-phone is. A tells her she can come pick it up, it’s still in his car. So M comes and gets her cell-phone back. Two days later, D answers the door. There are two police officer asking if A.C. is home. D looks at A sleeping on the sofa, then at the police, then at A, then at the police, then says in his genius brain, “A ain’t here.”
About this time, A, who was only half asleep, said, “No, I’m here. Let ‘em in.” So the police come in and arrest A for armed robbery of a cell-phone, and the arrest D, (which in this case, stands for dumb), for lying to a police officer. D was out after 24 hours, but A is still there. I asked him if he’d thought about getting M to drop the charges. He said that he wasn’t going to do that because of the principle of the thing. He didn’t do anything wrong. He didn’t even own a gun. He’s going to wait it out until his court date. He told me if the charges were dropped by M now… it would look a bit suspect. Like she’d been threatened to drop the charges or else. No, says A, best to let the legal system run it’s course. I don’t think it’s fair what has happened to A. Elder Pierce made a good comment. He said, “A knows he didn’t do anything wrong, so he’s going to wait it out.” This is his great quote, “Wait it through if you know it’s true.” I like that.
